If you’re choosing between Emsculpt and TempSure, start here: the two treatments work on different layers of the body. Emsculpt uses electromagnetic energy to strengthen and tone muscle. TempSure uses radiofrequency to firm skin and soften fine lines. So the right choice depends on whether your concern is in the muscle, the skin, or both.
At Bowtique Med Spa in Sarasota and Lakewood Ranch, our providers work under two national medical directors. Dr. J. David Holcomb is a double board-certified facial plastic surgeon, and Dr. Marc Salzman is a board-certified plastic surgeon with more than 30 years in practice. Our TempSure treatments are performed by Liz Valera, a licensed esthetician with advanced TempSure certification from Cynosure. Below, we explain how each treatment works, who it suits, and what to ask before you book.
What Is Emsculpt and How Does It Work?
Emsculpt is a non-invasive body contouring treatment that strengthens and tones muscle with high-intensity focused electromagnetic (HIFEM) energy. While you lie comfortably on the treatment table, the applicator triggers strong, rapid muscle contractions, far more than you could produce on your own at the gym.
The device is FDA-cleared to improve abdominal tone and to strengthen, tone, and firm the buttocks, thighs, and arms. In a peer-reviewed MRI study published in Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, 22 patients each completed four 30-minute abdominal sessions. Two months later, their abdominal muscle thickness had increased by an average of 15.4%, and their fat thickness had decreased by an average of 18.6%.
What Is TempSure® and How Does It Work?
TempSure is a radiofrequency (RF) treatment that firms skin and smooths wrinkles by gently heating the deeper layers of the skin. That controlled warmth prompts your body to produce new collagen, so skin looks smoother and feels firmer over time.
TempSure works on the skin itself, not the muscle underneath. The American Academy of Dermatology describes non-invasive RF as a device placed against the skin to heat the tissue beneath it. At Bowtique, we use TempSure to soften forehead lines, frown lines, crow’s feet, and smile lines, and we also offer it as a body treatment where skin has lost some firmness.
Emsculpt vs. TempSure: Key Differences at a Glance
The simplest way to compare the two is side by side:
- What it treats: Emsculpt targets muscle. TempSure targets skin.
- Energy type: Emsculpt uses HIFEM (electromagnetic) energy. TempSure uses radiofrequency heat.
- Common goals: Emsculpt is for better muscle tone and definition. TempSure is for fine lines, wrinkles, and mild to moderate skin laxity.
- Treatment areas: Emsculpt treats the abdomen, buttocks, thighs, and arms. TempSure treats both the face and the body.
- How it feels: Emsculpt feels like intense, rhythmic muscle contractions. TempSure feels like gradual, comfortable warmth.
- Downtime: Neither treatment requires downtime.
- Results timeline: Emsculpt results build over the weeks after your treatment series. TempSure results develop gradually as new collagen forms.
Which Treatment Matches Your Goals?
The best choice depends on what you’d like to change.
- Emsculpt may be the better starting point if you want a firmer core, more lift in your glutes, or more definition in your arms or thighs.
- TempSure is likely the better fit if your main concern is crepey or loosening skin, or fine lines on your face.
- Both treatments may be worth considering if you’d like stronger muscle tone and firmer skin over the same area, such as the abdomen after pregnancy or weight changes.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Each Treatment?
Emsculpt works best for healthy adults who are at or near a stable weight and want to improve muscle tone. In the MRI study, patients with a BMI in the normal range saw the most significant improvements. Emsculpt is not a weight-loss treatment, and it’s generally not recommended for people who:
- Are pregnant
- Have metal or electronic implants (such as a pacemaker) in or near the treatment area
TempSure suits people with mild to moderate skin laxity or fine lines. According to the AAD, skin tightening may not help when sagging is significant. It also isn’t recommended during pregnancy, with an active skin infection, or while taking certain medications. The American Society for Dermatologic Surgery adds blood-clotting problems to that list.
What to Expect: Sessions, Downtime, and Results
Both treatments fit easily into a busy schedule, with no recovery time. The main difference is how quickly results appear.
Emsculpt is usually done as a series of about four 30-minute sessions, spaced a few days apart. Some patients feel mild muscle soreness afterward, similar to the day after a hard workout. Improvements in tone continue in the weeks after your final session.
TempSure is also done as a series, and your provider will tailor the number of sessions to your skin. Some people notice temporary redness afterward. Because the results come from new collagen, they build gradually. The ASDS notes that collagen-based skin tightening often takes three to six months to show its full effect.
Can You Combine Emsculpt and TempSure?
Yes. Because Emsculpt and TempSure treat different layers, they can work well together. For example, a patient might use Emsculpt to strengthen the abdominal muscles and TempSure to firm the skin over the same area. That way, one plan addresses both muscle tone and skin quality.
Your Bowtique provider will help you decide whether combining treatments makes sense and how to schedule your sessions.
Questions to Ask During Your Consultation
Bring these questions to your appointment so you leave with a clear plan:
- Is my concern mainly muscle tone, skin laxity, or both?
- How many sessions will I likely need, and how far apart?
- When should I expect to see results, and how long will they last?
- Are there any health factors, implants, or medications that affect my eligibility?
- Would combining treatments help me reach my goals?
- What does maintenance look like after my first series?
